Grieving after the death of her young son Joseph, novelist Betty Fisher (Kiberlain) enters a dark depression. Hoping to bring her out of it, her mother Margot (Nicole Garcia) arranges to kidnap another child, José, to replace the son Betty lost. Meanwhile, Jose’s mother Carole (Seigner) is looking for her son and takes part in a police hunt which draws towards a dramatic finale. A taut drama, adapted from a short story by Ruth Rendell.
