There are fewer books written about Sisley than about any other Impressionist artist and it was not until the 1990’s that major exhibitions of his works were mounted: one at the Royal Academy, London in 1992 and one at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris in 1993. According to Matisse, ‘A Cézanne is a moment of the artist while a Sisley is a moment of nature.’ We shall look at a number of Sisley’s landscapes and perhaps discover whether the major source of his inspiration was English or French.
