From the middle of the 19th century Parisian cafes began to play an ever increasing role in the cultural life of the city: the Café Guerbois and the Nouvelle Athènes providing a regular meeting place for many artists. Not surprising therefore that artists found them a rich and intriguing source of subject matter. We will look at and in some cases and compare the handling of this theme by a number of artists: known (Degas, Renoir, Manet) and lesser known (Forain, Raffaëlli).
