From 18 October 2013 to 23 February 2014, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is presenting an important retrospective exhibition of the work of the Russian born artist Serge Poliakoff (1900 - 1969).
Leaving Russia during the Revolution, Poliakoff travelled through Europe, earning his living as a musician, reaching Paris in 1923 where he studied art at la Grande Chaumière and l’Académie Colarossi. After a stay in England and some time spent at the Slade School, Poliakoff returns to Paris, meets Kandinsky, Robert and Sonia Delaunay and begins to paint his first colour abstract works and is a member of the ’New’ School of Paris. Poliakoff becomes a French citizen in 1962.
We shall look at a range of this artist’s works to discover what other influences lay behind his attitude to colour and abstraction.
