Pierre Laval (1883-1945) is undoubtedly one of the most controversial figures of French history. Fred Kupferman writes about him: “This man has a unique place in the collective memory. People had always felt resentment towards him: in 1935 when he was accused of the crisis, as well as when he embodied Vichy’s government acts in 1944.” A retrospective of Pierre Laval’s political career will enlighten us on the choices he made at the darkest times of French history.
