Cinema Talk: La beauté du geste dans le cinéma d’Agnès Varda

Tuesday 28 May 17:30-19:00

Dr François Giraud, a specialist of French literature from the University of Edinburgh, will deliver a talk about the works of Agnès Varda, an iconic French New Wave director and multifaceted artist who passed away earlier this year.

Focused on the treatment of gesture in her films, the analysis will draw on video extracts to establish its seminal character in Varda’s aesthetics. Giraud writes:

"Through gesture, Varda explores the relationships between life and art, reality and imagination, the individual and the collective, as well as the nature of artistic practices such as cinema and painting. Gestures are not only a source of emotions and sensations for the viewer, but also a source of creation. The beauty of filmed gesture is unveiled by the gaze of the director."
