The obscure cities "between utopia and dystopia"
Architecture and comics have always nurtured a special bond. Yet, no comics have put architecture on such a pedestal as François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters’s Obscure Cities did.
These albums play around the patterns of an obsolete modernity - that of Jules Verne, Albert Robida or Le Corbusier. By doing so, they offer a future as people would have imagined in the past. The cityscape, as a result, becomes the melting pot of different styles and periods. Halfway between utopia and dystopia, The Obscure Cities inspire dreams about the infinite shapes cities could take now and later.

About Benoît Peeters
Benoît Peeters is the author of three books about Tintin’s creator: Hergé’s world (Casterman, 1983), Hergé, Tintin’s son (Flammarion, 2002) and Reading Tintin, the delighted jewellery (Les Impressions Nouvelles, 2007). With the illustrator François Schuiten, Peeters is the co-author of the famous comics The Obscure Cities. Novelist, graphic novelist, intellectual biographer, cultural historian and screen-writer, he is currently Professor of Graphic Fiction and Comic Art at Lancaster University.
