An adaptation of the work of Albert Camus performed by Jean-Paul Schintu

A biographical tale which recalls the author’s childhood and adolescence in Algeria at the turn of the 20th century (his intensely close relationship with his mother, his search for his father, the fraternity of the poor, the primary damage caused by colonialism, the French public school, the awakening of sensuality in the presence of nature) with the Algerian war as a backdrop to the work while it was being written at the end of the 1950s.

Discovered in his briefcase at the scene of the accident which cost him his life, Camus had already been working on this novel for several years, with the aim of telling this story of immigration through the father he never knew but he also wanted it be a tribute to the population of Algeria – Christian, Jewish and Arab – which was being ripped apart at the time he was telling the story. This text deals with human condition, personal commitment, rapport with memory and affection for a land and community.

Récit autobiographique qui évoque l'enfance et l'adolescence de l'auteur en Algérie au début du 20ème siècle (le lien fusionnel à la mère, la recherche du père, la fraternité des pauvres, les premiers dégâts du colonialisme, l’école de la République, l'éveil à la sensualité devant la nature), mais aussi le moment d'écriture de l’œuvre avec en toile de fond la guerre d'Algérie à la fin des années 50.
Retrouvé dans sa serviette sur les lieux de l’accident qui lui coûta la vie, Camus travaillait à ce roman depuis quelques années déjà, voulant entreprendre cette histoire d’immigration à travers la figure de ce père qu’il n’a pas connu, mais aussi comme un hommage à cette population d’Algérie – chrétienne, juive et arabe – qui, au moment où il le raconte, se déchire. Texte sur la condition humaine, l’engagement personnel, le rapport à la mémoire, l’attachement à une terre et à une communauté.
