Ferdinand de Saussure: la légende et les peuples d’Europe

Thursday 20 October 2016 18:00-19:30

Marking the centenary of Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure’s Cours de linguistique générale, Claire Joubert, professor of English literature at Université Paris 8, presents here some of the linguist’s less famous works as an ethnologist and folklorist, exploring and theorizing some of the social and cultural themes that, still nowadays, are some of the biggest worries of the Europeans: what exactly defines the peoples and how to conceptualise the notion of people, between globalisation, migrations and new forms of populism?

Ms Joubert’s visit to Edinburgh is the result of a collaboration between the Institut français, the Diaspolinks Research Group, the University of Edinburgh’s French Section and Université Paris 8.
