Musical programme:

A solo guitar recital featuring French composers who have significantly contributed to the guitar repertoire. A colourful and fascinating programme of music from the 19th and 20th century featuring renowned composers Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Jacques Ibert, Jean Francaix with less known but very significant guitarist/composers, Napoleon Coste, Antoine de Lhoyer, and François de Fossa. Spain (perceived as the guitar’s native home) and France shared mutual artistic influences. The guitar is a fitting medium for the expression of these influences, which this programme reveals. There is also a Scottish connection with variations…

About the artist:

Originally from Ohio, USA, Stephen Morrison studied guitar extensively with the eminent guitar teacher Ray Chester earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in guitar performance at the Peabody Conservatory of the John Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland. Subsequently in 1983 Stephen was appointed as guitar instructor at the Peabody Conservatory and the Levine School of Music in Washington D. C. Having moved to Scotland in 1989, he happily divides his time between playing, teaching, and studying the guitar. He was employed by Fife Council for eighteen years as an Instrumental Instructor. In 2015 Stephen moved to Edinburgh and continues to teach privately and is a regular feature in Edinburgh’s musical life. He performs on modern guitars as well as a beautifully restored 19th-century guitar which encompasses the two areas of music Stephen has an affinity towards.
