Franco-Scottish Society: Corsica - Fortress Villages of the Haute Balagne

Wednesday 17 April 19:00-21:00

As part of the Franco-Scottish Society’s 2018-2019 lecture series, Dr Kenneth Thompson will be delivering a talk on Corsica and the Fortress Villages of the Haute Balagne.

Dr Kenneth Thompson tries to move away from the beaches and expensive tourist traps of the island, taking a look at Corsican rural life and landscape, the sort that make this island different, attractive and memorable.

"The fortress villages of Haute Balagne are among the most picturesque on the island, their higgledy-piggledy terracotta rooftops and belfries presiding over an idyllic Mediterranean landscape of cypress-studded olive groves, backed by a dramatic wall of pale grey mountains."
— David Abram’s Rough Guide to Corsica

About the Franco-Scottish Society
The Franco-Scottish Society of Scotland, founded in Edinburgh in 1895, is an unincorporated organisation recognised as a Scottish Charity (No SC 002507). Its members are spread over seven Branches: in Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth and St Andrews. National office-bearers and Branch representatives form the Council of the Society which meets twice a year, generally in November and March. The different Branches host the Annual General Meeting in rotation. The Society maintains close links with the Association Franco-Écossaise which began life in Paris in 1896.

About the Speaker
Dr Kenneth Thompson is a geographer, musician, and Edinburgh native, having contributed to the city’s cultural life through his work with local composer Dr Charles O’Brien, Opus 8 (the vocal ensemble he founded in 1986), Dunfermline Abbey, and the Thomas Wilson Trust. Dr Thompson earned his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1972 with a dissertation on Glacial Geomorphology of part of the Scottish Highlands, identifying three Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) related to this. After completing his studies, Dr Thompson continued to contribute to text books and scholarly journals. He has worked as an editor for the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers and as a tour manager for the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

This event is delivered as a coproduction with the Franco-Scottish Society
