Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

Tuesday 6 November 2012 18:30-20:30

Wednesday 7 November 2012 14:00-16:00

The French Film Festival UK celebrates its 20th anniversary this year (8 - 30 November) with a programme bigger and stronger than ever before ! As a long standing supporter of ’La Fete du Cinema’ over the years, we are pleased to accompany this important edition with ’The Universe of Jacques Demy’ a season dedicated to the French director that will get you in the mood for the upcoming feast of French cinema!

Following the huge success of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), Jacques Demy went on to make Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, a large scale tribute to the Hollywood musical featuring screen legend Gene Kelly.

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort centres on twin sisters Delphine and Solange (played by real life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac). Tired of their humdrum existence in the picturesque seaside town of Rochefort, they dream of leaving to find success and romance in Paris, just as a carnival and an American composer (Gene Kelly) hit town.

With a plot of pure Shakespearean farce, witty dialogue and lyrics by Demy and a magnificent jazz score by three-times Academy Award winner Michel Legrand, this has to be one of the most joyously ebullient movies ever.
