Parenthèse (Musique) The Poetry and Letters of Mary Queen of Scots

Thursday 27 July 19:00-20:30

Passion, intrigue, murder. Mary Queen of Scots comes alive in three newly commissioned pieces by top contemporary composers exploring, in her own words, love and betrayal.

In this Parenthèse, Louise Macdonald will give an innovative ’concert-talk’ uncovering the composers’ insights and Mary’s enduring influence in music ahead of her Fringe performance this summer.

Who was Mary and who were the key literary figures in her life? From Petrarch and Ronsard to Buchanan, who supported Mary and who led to her demise? Research into Schumann’s Maria Stuart Lieder shows the direct connection with Mary’s French and Latin poetry.
