Regards croisés sur les "ailleurs" fantasmés

Thursday 5 May 2016 18:00-19:30

In her talk Françoise Kral will focus on how the Orient has served as a backdrop to a large array of cultural productions in both France and Britain since the 18th century.

A source of inspiration for writers and painters in particular, the Orient has also become a fantasized locus whose successive representations are revealing of a taste for exoticism tinged with a certain voyeurism.
Françoise Kral is a specialist of postcolonial studies and cultural productions from the colonial period.

Ms Kral’s visit to Edinburgh is the result of a collaboration between the Institut français, the Diaspolinks Research Group, the University of Edinburgh’s French Section and Caen University’s ERIBIA.
