Vive le Fringe ! 2018

From 3 to 27 August 2018

The Institut français d’Ecosse is the Scottish outpost of the French Embassy and a historic Edinburgh Festival and Fringe partner since our opening in 1946. Our Vive le Fringe ! programme showcases high quality work from French and European artists. We also host Book Festival and Art Festival related events. Our three performance spaces, médiathèque, and bistrot located in the heart of the Old Town are family friendly and make us a must-stop venue for Fringe audiences.

From August 3rd to 27th, we will be hosting 6 shows from exciting French, Scottish, and European artists based locally and on the continent.

Edinburgh International Festival

This summer, France is brought into the limelight at the Edinburgh International Festival with a special residency of the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord bringing 3 daring works to the Scottish capital: Peter Brook’s The Prisoner, The Beggar’s Opera staged by Robert Carsen with the Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants, and La Maladie de la mort by Katie Mitchell. Other highlights include The Barber of Seville staged by Larent Pelly, Rossini’s La Cenerentola with the Opera de Lyon Orchestra and 3 concerts by acclaimed French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, artist in residence at this year’s festival.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

The Institut français is proud to support French writers coming to the Edinburgh International Book Festival each year. Truly international, the Book festival gives centre stage to recently translated books published in the English language, and is an exceptional occasion to hear writers, illustrators and translators talk about their work - often books also supported by Institut français translation grants.
