Set in Bamako, Malian director Daouda Coulibaly’s political crime thriller, his debut feature, tells the story of Ladji, a low-level transit worker that is exasperated by a lack of opportunities in Mali’s harsh capital. Ladji turns to drug trafficking and rapidly ascends in Bamako’s criminal underworld which eventually gives him access to unimaginable wealth.
Wulu skilfully merges African oral storytelling traditions with a modern narrative to create an exhilarating plot.
This screening is held in partnership with the Africa in Motion Film Festival.
The beauty of Wulu is that even without any knowledge of the political situation in Mali, the film also works as a straightforward rollercoaster genre ride. [...] Coulibaly is a talent to watch.
