Join us for the World Premiere performance of The Gemstone Arias composed by Jay Capperauld with text by Niall Campbell, performed by Rosie Lavery (soprano) and Anna Michels (piano).

The Gemstone Arias are inspired by five distinct precious mineral stones and their unique synaesthetic qualities. Each precious stone, otherwise known as a gemstone, is an organic product made from the elemental materials of the earth through crystallisation and various other geological processes (including temperature, pressure, time and spacial processes) which form colourful solid stones and crystals that are often used in jewellery and décor as well as healing and spiritual practices. This piece focuses on five different gemstones that are divided into five movements which intend to explore the specific colours, textures, metaphors, symbolism and characteristics that are associated with each stone. From a synaesthetic perspective, each movement is designed to capture and elicit a sensorial response to each gemstone as though the words and music offer a perceptual understanding of each stone.

Commissioned by Live Music Now Scotland, with generous funding from Gavin McEwan.
