As part of the ongoing partnership with the Institut français d’Ecosse, the Franco-Scottish Society Edinburgh branch presents the conference The story of the Cashmere shawl and the ‘Paisley’ pattern with a French twist to the tale by Odile Hughson.
This popular and ancient motif has travelled around the world, especially on the shawls worn by ladies from the French Revolution up to the end of the Victorian era. Through the portraits of the times one can follow the changing fashions and the evolution of this decoration which is still much admired today, especially in Provence. Of course, we will also find out how it got the name ‘Paisley pattern’?
