John Butt in concert

Thu 16 April at 7pm

Musical Director of the Dunedin Consort, John Butt invites us on a journey that begins in Italy, where Girolamo Frescobaldi composed with freedom and harmonic imagination. We then travel to France, encountering the elegance of Louis Couperin and the dramatic flair of Jean-Philippe Rameau, whose ornamentation defined the French musical identity. Crossing the Channel, Henry Purcell created a unique introspective voice rooted in English melancholy. The programme concludes in Germany, where Johann Jakob Froberger ultimately paved the way for Johann Sebastian Bach, whose work crowns the Baroque era.

The harpsichord, predecessor of the piano, serves as the unifying thread of this musical voyage, bringing together diverse national identities through its clarity, resonance and expressive nuance.
