Scotland’s curriculum is evolving. Since June 2025, over 200 colleagues have been involved in updating the Languages curriculum, led by colleagues from Education Scotland. This presentation by Andrew McCulloch and Robbie Kirk, National Advisers – Languages for Education Scotland will provide an update on the work undertaken so far and how it will support improved language learning experiences for Scotland’s learners.

 

This conference is organized as part of the European Day for Languages.

Andrew McCulloch

National Adviser – Languages

Education Scotland

 

Andrew is currently on a secondment to Education Scotland where is working as a national adviser with a focus on supporting the work of the Curriculum Improvement Cycle and providing support to schools and local authorities.

 

His substantive post is Curriculum Leader for Modern Languages at Portobello High School in Edinburgh where he has taught for 14 years.

 

Andrew was until recently the Chair of the Scottish Association for Language Teaching, leading the development of professional learning opportunities for primary teachers and secondary languages teachers.

 

In addition to these roles, Andrew is also an experienced senior appointee for SQA for National 5 French and a marker for Advanced Higher French.


Robbie Kirk

National Adviser – Languages

Education Scotland

 

Robbie Kirk is a National Adviser for Modern Languages with Education Scotland, currently seconded from his role as Principal Teacher of Modern Languages at Chryston High School in North Lanarkshire Council.

With extensive experience in language teaching and curriculum development, Robbie is passionate about promoting high-quality language learning and supporting practitioners across Scotland.

His work focuses on empowering teachers, enhancing pedagogy, and ensuring that learners are equipped with the linguistic and intercultural skills needed in today’s world.

Robbie is also a highly experienced senior appointee for SQA, undertaking roles including Principal Assessor for National 5 German and Principal Verifier for German.
