To commemorate the 200th anniversary of ‘The Glasgow Looking-Glass’, the world’s first comic, the French Institute will host a Talk with comics expert and artists John McShane, Peter Renshaw and Colin Maxwell, and a special exhibition.
The Talk will come back on the history of ‘The Glasgow Looking Glass’, from its creation the 11th June 1825 to its legacy and rebirth in 2025 with the new ‘Looking-Glass’,
The magazine is an early example of topical graphic journalism, a genre that became increasingly popular throughout the nineteenth century. While many of these satirical publications were short lived, several – such as ‘The Glasgow Looking Glass’ – became national institutions.
