As the Institut français d’Écosse celebrates its 80th anniversary, join us for a fascinating exploration of its history, its predecessors and the other organisations that have contributed to the longstanding cultural relationship between France and Scotland.
How did these institutions come into being, and how have their roles evolved over the decades? What place do they hold in Scotland’s cultural life today? This talk will look back at the origins and development of French cultural diplomacy in Scotland, while also considering the role these organisations continue to play in bringing French and Scottish communities together.
The discussion will also explore the current mission and strategy of the Institut français d’Écosse, and how France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs uses its cultural network as a form of soft power. From promoting the French language and supporting artistic and cultural exchange to strengthening international dialogue, the Institut français plays an important role in sharing French culture while building lasting connections with Scotland.
The event will bring together Odile Hughson, whose longstanding interest in Franco-British relations and Scottish history has led her to explore the institutions and people behind this cultural relationship, and Stéphane Pailler, Consul General of France in Edinburgh and Glasgow and Director of the Institut français d’Écosse.
